Maroochydore CBD is set to reach new heights

The Maroochydore CBD is set to reach new heights with two six-storey commercial developments approved for Plaza Parade. Works have begun on the new subdivision on the vacant land beside the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre. A Sunshine Coast Council spokeswoman said the works would create “development ready commercial lots”.

The approved subdivision is for four lots including two commercial lots, a narrow park and pathway along the eastern side of Cornmeal Creek, connecting under Maroochy Boulevard to the Sunshine Cove pedestrian network. The spokeswoman said one commercial lot had approval for a six-storey mixed use commercial development, consisting of office and restaurant space and indoor recreation (gym).

The other commercial lot is intended to accommodate a six-storey mixed use development comprising similar uses. The work is not expected to affect businesses at Central One and there is no work planned for that side of Southern Cross Drive. But a Central One business complex employee said the twin towers were “just the start of the CBD”. She said it was hard to imagine the one-storey Plaza Parade complex being “towered over by the commercial buildings” next door.

The land developer is Chardan Development Group, while the developer of the commercial buildings is Pratt Property. Chardan Development Group manager, Glen Cassidy, said the development was a “good news story” and “a vote of confidence for the area”. “People are willing to spend money on new developments which is a reflection on the new business district that the council is creating”. Pratt Property’s owner, Mal Pratt, did not want to comment.
